There once was a time when I believed Meryl Streep to be overrated.
I have since changed my tune, and have come to the conclusion that she is not human, but some sort of acting cyborg. Look over her full body of work, and you will see that not only can she seamlessly incorporate any accent demanded of her, but she can disappear in to a character so completely, that you can watch her play a two-and-a-half-minute scene as an elderly rabbi (in Angels in America), and never realize it’s her. The assessment of her as the greatest and most versatile actress alive is most likely accurate.
The recent announcement of this year’s Oscar nominees brought Ms. Streep her 17th nomination for The Iron Lady, in which she plays Margaret Thatcher. Streep is the most nominated actor in the Academy’s history, with Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson tying for second place (with 12 nominations each).
In our catalog you’ll find the two films she actually won Oscars for: Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice. You’ll also find essentials like Out of Africa, Postcards from the Edge, One True Thing, Adaptation, The Devil Wears Prada, Doubt, and Julie and Julia.
Of her non-nominated work, here are some well worth checking out: Manhattan, Heartburn, Defending Your Life, Death Becomes Her, The River Wild, Marvin’s Room, The Hours, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and It’s Complicated.
Spend some time with the reigning Oscar queen, and you too will believe the hype.
