First of all, it’s not exactly biblical in scope or detail, but for a good time, check out Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible. It’s a fun, accessible history of Western fashion, arranged into separate chapters on such essential items as underwear, jeans, t-shirts and sweaters. He offers fascinating bits of history; for example, did you know that there were corsets designed for men in the 1800s, in order to squash their flab and improve the manliness of their appearance? Tim Gunn wants you to know the significance of the clothes you wear; in addition, the fastidious Mr. Gunn offers his critiques of how and why we shouldn’t wear what we do. Written in his distinctive voice, this book gives us the history of fashion with lots of great images, and seeks to inspire us to find our own best style.
