Before Midnight, the third film in Richard Linklater‘s divine trilogy (following Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004)), premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It was immediately picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics, and a release date of May 24th has been announced.
For those of us who have been following Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) since they first met on that fateful train 18 years ago, this newest (and final?) chapter is cause for elation. For those who are unfamiliar with one of the greatest (certainly the most existential) screen romances of the last couple of decades, there is plenty of time to rectify this — the first two films are available in our catalog.
Bonus: Check out Linklater’s trippy Waking Life (2002), which features a short, animated installment of the pair’s eternal conversation.
