It’s Trevor. I like to read graphic novels, and I recently read a great children’s graphic novel called, Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword by Barry Deutsch. What caught my attention with this graphic novel was its subtitle: Yet Another Troll-Fighting 11-Year-Old Orthodox Jewish Girl. How great is that?! One of my favorite things about this book is how the author incorporates a few Yiddish words into the dialogue and gives the English translation at the bottom of the page. I find Orthodox Jewish culture and the Yiddish language fascinating AND I love a book with a strong, young, female protagonist AND I find talking pigs and knitting trolls to be hilarious – so this book was made for me. The one thing I don’t love about the book is that it was illustrated by computer. There’s something unattractive to me about the perfection of computer illustrations. But if that doesn’t bother you, then you’ll love this graphic novel!
