We depend heavily on volunteers for a variety of duties within the Central Library and our 7 branches. Below is a sample of the positions offered (note, not all positions are available all the time and/or at all branch locations):
Tech Services: Pull books to be withdrawn, stamp withdrawn books and place in boxes, scan books for inventory.
Public Services: Shelving of books, videos, etc in adult and children’s, straighten and tidy shelves (Adopt a Shelf), shelf reading. Look for items on Paging List and Lost/Missing List, periodically update call numbers on shelf ends.
Computer Area, Computer Lab: Assist staff with setting up patrons on computers, load paper for printer, keep magazine exchange area in order.
Reference: Enter names into obituary database, research obituaries, assist in History Room, maintain and update information.
Children’s: Summer Reading Program Helper – assist staff with registering, craft programs, puppet shows, storytime, and other tasks as requested.
Homebound: Assist staff with moving books from library to van, delivering books to patrons unable to access the library, cleaning van.
Literacy: Tutor adults to improve reading, writing, and math skills, learn English as a Second Language, GED preparation, Citizenship and facilitate conversation groups (A tutor-training workshop is required).
Friends Bookstore: Clerk in bookstore includes sort, price and maintain bookshelves in bookstore.
Administration: Clerical duties, can include filing, making copies, data entry.
Special Events & Projects: As needed, some are once a year or seasonal.
Volunteer Applications
- All volunteers candidates must be at least 14 years old.
- Volunteers 18+ are subject to a background check.
- Return applications to any library location.
