Food assistance information event set for Feb. 7-8 at Collbran Branch

Photo of Collbran Branch Library window signA two-day event focusing on food assistance for the public is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, at the Mesa County Libraries Collbran Branch, 111 Main St. in Collbran.

The event will showcase a variety of food-assistance programs available to low-income residents and others. Representatives of various programs will be available for application assistance. All events are open to the public at no charge.

Here is a schedule of events:

4-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7

  • Food preparation demonstration by Cooking Matters, a program that encourages families to make healthy, affordable food choices. (The Cooking Matters event runs from 4-4:30 p.m.)
  • In-person information and application assistance for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of families in need so they can buy healthy food.
  • A representative of the Plateau Valley Assembly of God Food Pantry will distribute information and answer questions.
  • A representative of WIC (a nutrition supplement program for women, infants, and children) will be present to provide information about the program, which supplies nutrition education and free, healthy food, breastfeeding support, and referrals for health care, child care, and other services.

10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 8
