Let’s Play! The Power of Playing With our Children

The world’s current situation is forcing so many of us to look at the world in a new way. How can we do our jobs differently? How do we change our home dynamic to fit all of these new Covid structures? While this may be difficult, it can also be a blessing. No matter how many are affected, we can choose to take our time and make the most of the situation in whatever form or means that suit you.

One of the best stress relievers and ways to spend extra time is to play. Playing is so incredibly important. Whether it’s reading, crafting, cooking, games, or anything else that makes you smile. This pause is a great time to remember how powerful play can be.

Think of the children in our lives. They are missing their school and neighborhood friends right now. How can we play with them? Maybe play dress up, house, or even play grocery shopping for tonight’s meal? Play is what gives access to learning. There are numerous studies, articles, and resources that show how important play is for our children. A great resource to use is NAEYC.org. Articles from that site can help grown ups learn more about play and how it helps children learn essential skills such as:

  • Abstract thinking
  • Vocabulary Skills
  • Emotional Skills
  • Self Control
  • Persistence
  • Relieves Stress
  • Cognitive Development
  • Creative Problem Solving
  • Motor Skills and Muscle Strength
  • Sensory Development

The benefits for adults are also there. Not only does it relieve stress for older generations too, but it can bring the joy of play back into hard working lives. Learning together in all ages is positive reinforcement and shows younger generations the power of lifelong learning.

We at Mesa County Libraries care about lifelong learning. We encourage you to play with the children in your lives. Sit down, stand up, spin in circles, crawl on the floor, and have fun. We recommend observing, listening, supporting verbally and non verbally, talking, and most importantly letting them take charge. Remember that you’re not alone! Mesa County Libraries has a ton of resources still at your fingertips to help everyone play together. We have early literacy boredom busters, kids club, virtual story time, and e-resources still available for you.
