Rocky Mountain PBS (RMPBS) wants to help younger children not fall behind in their reading skills due to Covid-19. To help out with at home learning, RMPBS created a  literacy program called Colorado Classroom: Read With Me at Home. In partnership with the governor, RMPBS created this program to help reach children all over Colorado to help with their learning during this time of uncertainty and closures. Teachers from across the Denver metro area are offering lessons from their own homes to creatively teach reading lessons. These videos aired from May 18th to June 19th, but they are all accessible on the RMPBS website or the PBS video app. Designed to be a formal classroom inspired setting for children, they last about 30 minutes each lesson.

Children can learn all about rhyming words, folk tales, contractions, present tense, past tense, and even how to read nonfiction text. The lessons don’t stop there–you might see some history, art, mindfulness, and dancing activities sneaking their way into the lessons, too.  It’s also impressive to see the teachers provide examples of activities that children can follow along with, so if paper and pencil is available to you, follow along!

There are six different levels of classes: kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, English learners k-1 beginning and intermediate, and English learners 2-3 beginning and intermediate. Another awesome bilingual feature is that all of the English class videos have Spanish subtitles. There are even printable worksheets in English and Spanish for children to continue on with the lesson once the video is over.

For those who don’t have internet access, RMPBS does have workbooks that can be shipped directly to you free of charge by calling 800-274-6666 or filling out the form HERE.
