Mesa County Libraries and the Literacy Center depend on hundreds of volunteers to provide great services to the community. National Volunteer Week (also National Library Week!) from April 10 – April 16 gives us an opportunity to thank our volunteers for being an integral part of our organization. In 2015 alone, library volunteers and Literacy tutors donated 16,700 hours of service to the benefit of Mesa County library users.
The library is proud to have about 200 volunteers a year who work in various capacities throughout Mesa County Libraries. Volunteers may serve as adult literacy tutors, shelvers, summer reading volunteers or commit to serving on a board such as the Teen Advisory Group, Friends of Mesa County Libraries, the Library Foundation or the Library Board.
Hannah Evans, Central Library Teen Librarian stated, “I am very fortunate to work with the Teen Advisory Group (TAG)! They are a very fun and creative group that offer valuable input on the teen collection and help develop programs and events aimed at their age group.”
There are many different opportunities to volunteer throughout Mesa County and we are fortunate that so many have chosen to donate their skills, talents and efforts to working with the library. Literacy Volunteer Coordinator, Wendy Kirby said, “We are so lucky at the Literacy Center to have incredibly supportive and passionate tutors, some of whom have volunteered with us for 12 years! It’s a joy to watch them interact and grow with our students.”
