Mesa County Libraries: Reaching Readers Everywhere

Mesa County Libraries (MCL) is committed to reaching every reader in our community—no matter their age, location, or physical ability. We know that not everyone can visit a library in person. That’s why we offer services that bring library materials directly to those who need them most.

Words on Wheels is one of MCL’s longest-running services. Designed for patrons who are no longer able to visit the library due to age, illness, or disability, Words on Wheels delivers materials straight to their doorsteps. Every other week, our vehicle stops at more than 30 locations across the county, including assisted living centers, retirement communities, and private homes.

From Palisade to Fruita, the service provides fiction and nonfiction books, large print titles, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazines. Selections are tailored to individual preferences, allowing readers to stay engaged with topics and genres they love.

“Words on Wheels makes a real difference,” says a Mesa County Libraries staff member. “For many of our patrons, the library was once a central part of their lives. This service helps preserve that connection. It’s about more than books—it’s about dignity, community, and continuing to feel seen.”

For those living in more remote parts of the county, Books by Mail is another great option. Residents in areas such as Glade Park, which are outside our regular delivery routes, can receive a curated selection of library materials through the mail. This free service ensures rural patrons aren’t left without access to books, movies, and other resources.

We also support the Colorado Talking Book Library (CTBL), a statewide program offered by the Colorado State Library. CTBL is available to Coloradans of all ages who are unable to read standard print due to visual, physical, or learning disabilities. It provides books and magazines in accessible formats including audio, Braille, and large print. Materials and delivery are free, and eligibility is open to anyone with a qualifying condition—whether temporary or permanent.

These services are part of our broader commitment to access and inclusion. At Mesa County Libraries, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to read, learn, and stay connected—regardless of circumstances. Outreach isn’t extra; it’s essential.

Whether you’re aging in place, living with a disability, or simply located far from the nearest branch, we’re here to serve you. Through Words on Wheels, Books by Mail, and CTBL, we’re bringing the library to your doorstep.
