Road Trip Reads

There’s nothing like a good audiobook to while away the hours on a long road trip or, for that matter, a short trip on a road under construction.  A great audiobook requires two things to capture your attention and entertain you: a great book and a great reader.  Here are some suggestions —

For a long trip, you might try Ken Follett’s Century trilogy, three books  which tell the intertwined stories of four families, starting at the time of the Russian Revolution and ending in the present day.  The reader, John Lee, uses dozens of different voices and accents to portray the characters.  The titles, in order, are Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, and Edge of Eternity.

61 Hours is a suspense/thriller in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child.  The plot of this book, read by Dick Hill, lends itself particularly well to the audiobook format.  As the title might suggest, the story takes place over 61 hours.  It will keep you on the edge of your car seat!

Occasionally, an audiobook is read by the author.  Sometimes this is a good thing; sometimes not.  In the case of Still Foolin’ Em by Billy Crystal, it’s a very good thing.    Some of the chapters are read to a live audience, so it sounds and feels like a Billy Crystal stand-up routine.  This memoir is touching and funny (warning: there is some adult language).
