Summer Fun at Mesa County Libraries

This summer will be full of adventure with Mesa County Libraries Summer Reading Program beginning on May 27 through July 19.

What is the Summer Reading challenge?

  • This year’s summer reading challenge is a BINGO-style adventure for the entire family! Pick up a BINGO sheet at any of our eight library branches or join the challenge virtually by signing up on Beanstalk through the Summer Reading page on the Mesa County Libraries website. Mark off spots as you complete activities and earn cool prizes to keep the summer fun rolling.

Who can participate?

  • Summer reading is for everyone. The library has challenges and prizes tailored to four age groups: Birth-Age 5, Ages 6-11, Ages 12-18, and Ages 19+.

Does it cost to participate in Summer Reading?

  • No! Summer Reading is a FREE program offered by Mesa County Libraries.

Is a library card needed to participate in Summer Reading?

  • You don’t need one to participate in Summer Reading but having a card makes it easy (and fun!) to check out books, movies, and more.

What else can I do at the library over Summer Reading?

  • The library hosts many entertainers, like magicians, balloon art, juggling, teen pirate workshops and many more.
  • A new fun event “trashion runway show” will debut this summer. Trashion blends clothing or accessories made from recycled or repurposed materials. Just bring your imagination, we will supply the rest!
  • Summer Reading Kick off Parties at various Mesa County Libraries locations.
  • Artist Michael Albert will offer a collaging class for all ages.
  • Make sure to check our event calendar for more summer reading events.

Why should someone participate in the Summer Reading Program?

  • During the summer, some school age children may experience the “summer slide,” which is a loss of academic skills and knowledge over the break. Summer Reading helps prevent that by keeping young minds engaged and ready for the next school year.
  • It is an excellent way to continue cultivating lifelong learning skills, learn new ways to express oneself, and gain personal insight
  • It’s also just a great way to have fun, meet new friends and connect with the community.

Cydney Clink, Head of Programming at Mesa County Libraries, said:

“We’d love to see as many in our community participate in Summer Reading as possible. Our goal is to read 2 million minutes together this summer!” Clink said. “You can count almost any kind of reading on your BINGO sheet. Listening to an audiobook or being read to by a family member counts as reading,” she continued.”Whether it’s a novel, a comic book, a magazine, or even the back of a cereal box—we want people to see all the different ways reading can be part of their everyday lives. The goal is to make reading a fun, lifelong habit.”
