Wrapping up Banned Books Week

banned

Libraries are a place with something to offend everyone. They are also places of discovery, wonder, enrichment, and understanding. Throughout this week dedicated to bringing Banned (and Challenged) Books to people’s attention, we have had some heart-warming moments: Listening to a mother tell her child the reasons given for banning Green Eggs and Ham, an obvious favorite of that child’s, seeing teens talking  about books they had read not knowing they were banned, a CMU English class sharing their group photo, taken in the library’s Banned Book nook, on our Facebook page, and the many people from our community who sat reading aloud or silently in our nook. We wanted people to see what they might have missed had someone gotten their way and successfully removed books from our shelves.

Devon Corneal wrote I Read Banned Books and So Do My Kids that very nicely sums up what Banned Books week means to me personally. What about you?
